This week in science, we explored a question inspired by a traditional tale…
Who was quicker – the tortoise or the hare?
To begin, the children recapped their learning about the five animal groups and discussed the characteristics of animals in each one. We then compared the tortoise and the hare, identifying which animal group they belonged to and labelling their body parts.
Next, we became scientists by watching a range of animals race over 10 metres and recording how many seconds each animal took to finish. The children carefully compared the results and discussed what they noticed.
We discovered that the hare was the fastest, completing the race in just 1 second, closely followed by the seagull in 2 seconds. The sheep and bee tied, both taking 4 seconds, whilst the tortoise was by far the slowest, taking a huge 144 seconds! The next slowest animal was the fish, taking 14 seconds.
