Our EYFS children have been busy designing and creating their own Tudor houses using junk modelling materials, inspired by our learning about the Great Fire of London.
We began by looking at pictures of houses from 1666 and talking about their key features, such as the white walls, wooden beams and closely packed buildings. The children then planned their own houses and selected from a range of recycled materials to build them.
As they worked, the children explored different ways to join materials together, experimenting with glue, tape and card. They showed great perseverance and creativity, adapting their designs as they went. Many children chose to cover their houses with white paper and add details using pens to reflect what Tudor houses looked like at the time.
This activity supported the children’s understanding of the past, while also developing their fine motor skills, problem-solving and imaginative thinking. It was wonderful to see how proud they were of their finished Tudor houses!
