Image of Growing Scientists!

This week, our young botanists in EYFS, Year 1, and Year 2 continued their exciting plant investigation by checking in on their sunflower seeds – and wow, what a change we saw!

We filled in our second plant diary entry and noticed that all our sunflower plants had grown taller and sprouted even more leaves since our last check. There were lots of smiles (and careful measuring!) as we compared the changes.

Then we became real scientists as we observed our three special experiment plants:

  • Plant A – No water
  • Plant B – No sunlight
  • Plant C – No warmth

We were amazed to discover that Plant B had started to grow – but it didn’t look healthy. Its stem was long and white, and its leaves had turned yellow. This helped us learn that plants can germinate without sunlight, but they don’t grow properly without it!

Plants A and C hadn’t grown at all, which helped us come to a very important conclusion:
Plants need water and warmth to germinate.

The children shared brilliant ideas, made careful observations, and asked some great scientific questions. What a fantastic week of exploring the wonders of plant life!
