Image of Hot Cross Buns and Easter Gardens!

This week in RE, the children in Class One explored the meaning of Easter and why the cross was placed in the garden.

We began our lesson by tasting a traditional Easter treat - hot cross buns! The children sampled different varieties, noticing the sweetness of the bread, the fruity pieces and the warm spices. As we enjoyed our snack, we discussed how these flavours could link to the Easter Story.

  • The spices reminded us of the sad events of Holy Week, including Jesus’ crucifixion.
  • The sweetness represented the joy and hope that came with the resurrection on Easter Sunday.
  • The fruits symbolised new life, just as Easter is a time of renewal and celebration.

After our discussion, the children worked in pairs to create their own Easter gardens in our outdoor classroom. Using a range of natural materials, they carefully designed beautiful scenes to reflect the story of Jesus’ burial and resurrection. They used soil, stones, flowers and leaves to shape their gardens and even tied sticks together to form crosses.

It was wonderful to see the children working so creatively and thoughtfully, considering the significance of each element they added. Their finished Easter gardens beautifully captured the story of hope and new life at the heart of Easter.
