Class One have enjoyed exploring the outdoors in our latest geography lesson to identify features in our school grounds. We started the lesson indoors by discussing familiar features in the classroom. The children pointed out everything from tables and the teacher’s desk to doors, windows, and our beloved reading tree.
Next, we explored different types of maps and talked about how they can help us find our way. We looked at symbols representing various features such as trees, buildings and playgrounds, and introduced directional language like “left”, “right”, “near” and “far”. The children practised using maps by tracing routes to specific features.
The children were then challenged to think about the similarities and differences between their school and the wider world by sorting pictures into three categories: features in the school grounds, features in the local area, and features that could be found in both places.
The highlight of the lesson was heading outside! In small groups, our young geographers explored the school grounds, using their new skills to identify and photograph different features. Back in class, the children shared their discoveries, showcasing their new geography skills and a sense of curiosity.
We’re so proud of our young geographers and their eagerness to explore the world around them!
