As part of our learning around traditional tales, the children carried out a science investigation inspired by the story of The Princess and the Pea.

We wanted to find out how many layers it would take before we could no longer feel the “pea” hidden underneath!

Our Reception children became princes and princesses, taking turns lying on layers of clothing while a marble acted as the pesky pea underneath. After each layer was added, they decided whether they could still feel it.

Meanwhile, our Year 1 and Year 2 children took on the role of scientists, recording the results and using the data collected to create block charts to compare our findings.

The results were very interesting — while some of our princes and princesses could no longer feel the marble after just 5 layers, others could still feel it even after 10 layers had been added!

The children loved combining storytelling with science and had a fantastic time investigating, predicting and recording their results.
