During Busy Bee time in our outdoor learning area, the children made an exciting discovery – a friendly Common Toad hopping along the path!
The children watched carefully as the toad jumped across the path and headed towards the tyres, where it cleverly hid amongst the leaves. We talked about how the toad was able to camouflage itself by blending in with the colours around it. The children also noticed that the toad had moist, bumpy skin.
The children began thinking about how they could help our visitor. They remembered that frogs like ponds, so they decided the toad might enjoy some water too! Using a tray, they worked together to create a makeshift pond filled with cool water for the toad to splash in.
This was also a great opportunity to recap our previous science learning about animal groups. The children remembered that frogs and toads belong to the Amphibians, animals that can live both on land and in water.
It was a wonderful moment of curiosity and teamwork as the children observed, discussed, and cared for our unexpected visitor. We love how our outdoor area can lead to such exciting real-life learning opportunities!
