In our EYFS maths lessons this week, the children took part in a fun building challenge inspired by Pig the Pug.
The children were introduced to Trevor the sausage dog from the story and were given a special maths challenge:
- Can you build a sausage dog that is shorter than Trevor?
Using a variety of junk modelling materials such as cardboard tubes, boxes, and containers, the children worked creatively to design and build their own sausage dogs. They had to think carefully about the length of their model and compare it to the model dog to make sure it was shorter.
Throughout the activity, the children practised important early maths skills including:
- Comparing longer and shorter
- Measuring by eye and checking against a model
- Problem solving and adapting their designs
- Using mathematical language such as shorter, longer, and length
The children showed great creativity and teamwork while building their sausage dogs, and they loved checking their models against Trevor to see if they had completed the challenge successfully.
It was a fantastic way to explore length and measurement through hands-on learning and play!
