We’ve had a "number-tastic" week in Reception! Our current obsession with Numberblocks has taken our maths skills to new heights!

Building Up Our Skills

Inspired by their favourite blocky friends, the children set to work building number towers. We practised:

  • Constructing towers from 1 to 5.
  • Ordering them from smallest to largest.
  • Recognising that each number is "one more" than the one before it.

It was wonderful to see the children comparing their towers and using their "maths eyes" to check the heights!

Bear-y Brilliant Number Bonds

The fun didn't stop at towers. During our continuous provision, we turned into maths detectives using egg boxes and coloured bears.

The mission? To find all the different ways to make the number 3.

The children worked hard to find different combinations (like 2 red bears and 1 blue bear) and even began writing their own number bond sentences. Seeing them translate their physical play into "3 = 2 + 1" was a real "aha!" moment for our young learners.

Teacher Tip: Ask your child at home if they can show you "three" using their fingers in two different ways!
