This week, Reception turned into a room full of programmers! We’ve been learning how to give clear commands to our robots to help them find their way.
Think Like a Robot
Before we even touched our paper robots, we had to become the robots! Working in pairs, the children took turns being the "Programmer" and the "Robot."
- The Programmer gave three instructions using only the words "forwards" and "backwards."
- The Robot had to predict where they would end up on our giant floor grid.
It was a fantastic way to practice our directional language and spatial awareness. There were lots of giggles as our "human robots" beeped and booped their way across the carpet!
Paper Programming
Once we mastered the movements, we moved to our desks to work with paper robots and grids. The children practised:
- Writing a sequence of three arrow commands.
- Predicting the final square.
- Moving their paper robot to check if their "code" worked!
The Big Challenge
To really test our skills, some children were given specific "mission targets" on their grids. They had to figure out exactly how many steps forwards or backwards were needed to reach the goal using a set number of commands. It required a lot of perseverance and "debugging" (fixing our mistakes)!
