Today, we officially launched our exciting new art topic: Marvellous Marks! We had an incredible time exploring how simple lines can become spectacular works of art that can even trick our eyes!
We started our journey by looking at the amazing artwork of a famous artist named Bridget Riley. She is a super-clever artist who uses lots of lines to create drawings that make you think they are moving, wiggling, and wobbling right off the page! Her work is all about optical illusions – that means they trick our eyes!
We explored the many different types of lines we could make. We discovered lines can be:
- Straight ____
- Wavy (like the sea!)
- Curved (like a rainbow!)
- Dotted . . . .
- Dashed ---
- Zigzag (like a mountain!)
We then experimented with lots of different materials to make these lines, including:
- Bright and smooth Oil and Wax Pastels
- Colourful Crayons
- Sharp Art Pencils
The children were brilliant at controlling their tools! We practised using different amounts of pressure (pushing hard or soft) and control to see what kind of mark each material made. We filled our sketchbooks with wonderful experiments!
Next, it was time to create a masterpiece! Each child used the different media and lines they had practised to create a mini piece of line artwork on a small square of black card.
The results are stunning! When we put all of our individual squares together, we created a giant Line Art Collage that really celebrates how lines, in all their different forms and colours, can be beautiful works of art! It looks like a huge, vibrant celebration of marks.
We can't wait to continue our Marvellous Marks topic next week and see what other amazing optical illusions and line art we can create!
Well done, artists!
