This week in history, we learnt all about William the Conqueror became the King of England! The children were absolutely captivated by the story of William’s invasion in 1066, his fierce battle with Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings, and how he earned the title “Conqueror” through sheer determination - and a lot of ruthlessness!
We explored the weapons used by the Normans and discovered how fierce and fearless William was in his quest for the throne. To help us understand this historic event, we studied the Bayeux Tapestry, a piece of art that tells the tale of the battle. Using our inference skills, we carefully examined each section, figuring out what was happening and who the people were.
The year 1 and 2 children had a great time sequencing the tapestry and writing their own descriptions of the battle, all while wearing crowns like true royalty! Meanwhile, the Reception children used their storytelling skills to verbally recount what they remembered about how William took the throne.
