In RE today, Class One took an exciting journey into the world of Diwali, the beautiful festival of light celebrated by Hindus and some Sikhs. We started by thinking about festivals we are familiar with, like Christmas and Easter, and discussed what makes each celebration special. Then, we explored some fascinating artefacts from Hinduism that helped us learn more about Diwali.
We watched some videos about a young girl named Jessica who celebrates Diwali with her family. We saw how they prepare by creating beautiful Rangoli and Mehndi patterns, decorating their home with light lamps called diyas and dressing up in colourful, traditional Indian clothes. We also learned how Jessica’s family pray together in a special temple in their home before enjoying a festive meal.
Through our discussion, we explored why Diwali is known as the “Festival of Light”. We learned that the light symbolises hope, goodness and the triumph of light over darkness. We compared Diwali with Christian festivals, noticing similarities like the themes of light, family gatherings and acts of kindness. It was a wonderful way for us to appreciate the shared joy that festivals bring, no matter what culture or religion celebrates them!
